Function name:
ASC
Category:
Text
Summary:
Converts full-width to half-width for ASCII and katakana characters. ASC is the complementary function to JIS.
Syntax:
ASC(Text)
Returns:
Returns a text string that comprises the converted characters.
Arguments:
Text is a string (in quotation marks) or a number, or a reference to a cell containing one of those types, that contains the characters to be converted.
Additional details:
Conversion is carried out for full-width ASCII and katakana characters, with some characters being converted in a special way (for more information on this, visit the JIS and ASC functions page located in another part of this wiki). Other characters are copied from the input string to the result string with no change.
Examples:
Formula | Description | Returns |
---|---|---|
=ASC("LibreOffice") where the characters comprising this argument are all full-width. | Here the function converts all characters in the input string to their half-width equivalents and returns the string "LibreOffice". | LibreOffice |
=ASC(234.56) | Here the function converts the characters of the input number to text, returning 234.56 as a string. | 234.56 |
=ASC(F1) where cell F1 contains the text "Calc" in half-width characters. | Here the function carries out no conversion because the input string contains no full-width characters. The word "Calc" is returned as a string. | Calc |
=ASC("ジ") | Here the function converts a full-width katakana character (Unicode U+30B8) to its half-width equivalent, returning シ (Unicode U+FF7C) as a string. | シ |
