Background

This page contains some important hints for wiki editors. Please read this page before adding translated or localized content to the wiki.

Naming and Subpages

The wiki is basically structured in two different ways:

  1. Content with global focus. Pages are set up in English and are translated to different languages. The translated pages are subpages named by their language code.
  2. Content with local focus. Pages are written in their local language only and won't be translated. They are subpages of a page named by the language code.

Content with global focus

Pages are set up in English and are translated to different languages. The translated pages are subpages named by their language code.

Examples:

 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/de (subpage German translation)
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/es (subpage Spanish translation)
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/fr (subpage French translation)
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/it (subpage Italian translation)
 ... and so on

Basics rules to create your pages:

  • The name of the translated article My Page will be My Page/xx, while xx is the ISO code of the language in lower case.
  • Always add {{OrigLang|}} to the original English page. It will display the links, to all language versions of this page.
  • Always add {{Lang|}} to a translated page, which will display the links, to all other language versions of this page.
  • If you'd like to translate the title as well, just add the translated title like this: {{Lang|Translated Title}}. Never change the article's name as this will break the language links.
  • Make sure you are working on the new article and don't accidentally translate the original one.

By this, the wiki engine supports the handling of multiple languages automatically.

  • It will display the links to all language versions of this page like this:
  • It will automatically add the language category to the pages.
  • The subpages will automatically be used by different MediaWiki extensions which detect language settings in browsers or user preferences. The user will then automatically be redirected into the appropriate subpage.
