LibreOffice DVD distribution

This is how I intend to create a DVD for distribution during training sessions and workshops I give on Free Software, including LibreOffice. I live in Montreal, Canada, so most of the text on the label is bilingual, and I am also including Spanish versions, langpacks and helpfiles.

Please note: This LibreOffice DVD content and label by Fabian Rodriguez - www.fabianrodriguez.com are licensed under a Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 Canada License except for installers and binaries under LGPLv3 and other respective licenses.

Content research and writing

For my purposes, and given my geographic context (Montreal, Canada), I will be focusing on en_US (U.S. English), fr (French) and es (Spanish) languages. I include other languages to introduce the multi-language support, while indicating others are available on the web site. I based my choices on statistics on most spoken languages in Quebec province.

I want to distribute Windows, Mac Intel & PPC, as well as GNU/Linux (32 & 64 bit, deb & RPM) versions of LibO. I also wrote & included readme files (in addition to LibO's project own) and Ubuntu installation instructions which I uploaded first to Ubuntu's wiki. I've posted updates about progess on the US Marketing list.

While revising my translated readme files I also corrected some of the LibO's wiki documentation so it would be consistent for a "Spanish-only" or "French-only" native speakers going through my instructions and then to the website. One example is the navigation bar at the top of the BugReport localized pages.

DVD label design

Selection 002.png

I've produced a draft DVD label (see the LibreOffice Draw and PDF versions). In small production runs (~<200) using inkjet labels is feasible manually using this label and burning your own DVDs, however for bigger runs professional burning may be considered. The life expectancy of manually-labeled DVDs is also shorter as they labels will most likely peel off and cause problems.

I am currently evaluating kunaki.com to outsource store / production of such DVDs.

The DVD label was created using the Liberation fonts and the Vegur Font (LibreOffice's logo font), and the LibreOffice contemporary color logo, all available in the Branding resources page.

Files

All files including sources of all docs and a final ISO of the latest version are available at: https://spideroak.com/browse/share/MagicFab/libodvd

All documentation used in this ISO is normally proposed / merged to official documentation as time permits, source files are only available here for convenience. Only official documentation should be considered current.

As of LibreOffice release 3.3.1 my choice of files occupies 1.8 GB so this is suitable for distribution on a DVD or on a 2GB USB key. Previous sizes:

* LibreOffice 3.3: 1.5 GB (didn't include RPMs)

I produced MD5 checksums which can be verified against LibreOffice.org files, by using this command:

find . -type f -print0 | xargs -0 md5sum > 0-Documentation/checksums.md5

Here is the file tree and contents of the DVD image:

The root directory of the above structure contains a README files in RTF format (as it is most likely to be easily readable, is in "source" format and has basic formatting) localized in English, French and Spanish and the documentation directory has the complete "Getting Started" guide from the LibO documentation.

ToDo

  • Add text files for the licenses (Creative Commons)
  • Craft a "sensible" AUTORUN.INF pointing to the Windows installer
  • Evaluate kunaki.com as a possible outsourced DVD provider/store
  • Add extensions for French spell/grammar checking

Changelog

  • 27-Feb-2011: Update for LibO 3.3.1:
    • Added link to source files and finalized ISO, shared on SpiderOak
    • Added RPMs
    • Changed readme files format to RTF
    • Added subdirectories for langpacks and helppacks in GNU/Linux
    • Updated Ubuntu docs to includ "restore OOo" instructions
  • 19-Jan-2011: First version for LibO 3.3
