Colors and Color palettes

Colors are defined in Color palettes. LibreOffice has several Color palettes to choose from. You can add any colors you like. And you can also create your own (user-defined) Color palettes.

Editing of Color palette

Editing a color palette using Writer as an example. Choose View ▸ Format Styles, ( F11 ). Right-click on a Paragraph style, for example.

Note:
Instead of the Paragraph Style, any other Format Style that allows the color settings can be used. The Format Style used for creating colors should not be changed either. It is only here a tool for color setting.

Choose Edit Style from the context menu. In the "Paragraph Style: xxx" dialog that opens, select the "Area" tabn. Click at Color button and at New select the desired color via RGB or Hex value or via the Pick button. Then click on the Add button at "Custom Palette". In the dialog that opens, enter a name for your new color and click OK. If you previously had a color palette other than Custom set, the Custom color palette will be displayed automatically. Repeat for other colors you want. When you have entered all the desired colors you want click Cancel. See also: Colors

Create a new color

Create a new color with the color values

In the "Paragraph Style" dialog you can add new colors to the Color palette "custom" or modify existing colors. In the colored sample under "New", click in the fields for RGB and enter values such as R = 255, G = 255, B = 127. Alternatively, enter a Hex value. You click on Add and enter a new name, e.g. "Medium yellow". Click on Add and enter a new name for the color, for example, "Medium Yellow". Then you see the color in the color sample. The new color is added to the palette at the end. You have now created a new color "Medium yellow". Click OK.

Visually select and create a new color

"Pick a Color" dialog

However, you may prefer to select a color visually, or you may have received special specifications in the HSB (HSV) color space (for hue/saturation/brightness). To do this, select the button Pick in the "Paragraph Style" dialog. In the "Pick a Color" dialog that opens you can now make further settings. Specify your required color, the base color above the vertical color bar. You can then click anywhere in the large Color area. The values are immediately displayed for the clicked point. You can also click, hold, and drag the point in the color swatch with the mouse. The selected color is displayed in the horizontal color bar to the left below the color swatch. If you like the color, release the mouse button and then simply click OK. You can make any necessary adjustments using the value fields. The color is displayed in the horizontal color bar. The selected color can then be applied using the Add button.

Create a new Color palette

You can also create a completely new color palette. However, this requires advanced knowledge of the operating system's directory structures and number systems. See also Create Color palette in LibreOffice.

Select color in the LibreOffice Components

In the individual components of LibreOffice the colors can be selected directly or you better use the Format Styles. Choose the Color palette "custom" to select your new colors.

Color Replacer

Texts taken from the online help: Color Replacer
The Color Replacer can be accessed in LibreOffice Draw and Impress. The following description uses Draw as an example. For example, select Extras ▸ Color Replacer from the menu. This opens the "Color Replacement" dialog, which is used to replace colors in bitmap files (such as BMP, GIF, JPG or PNG) and meta-graphics (such as WMF). Up to four colors can be replaced at the same time. The transparency attribute is also considered a color. You can replace transparency in an image with a color, for example, white. This is useful if, for example, your printer driver has problems printing transparent graphics. Conversely, you can replace a color with transparency (see-through).

In the "Example" image above, the page background is yellow in Draw. The color of the way in the landscape has been replaced with transparency, allowing the page color to show through.
