Minutes of the Design Hangout: 2015-02-18
    * Present: Cor (bit later), Jay (bit later), Heiko, Ibrahim, Kendy, Mattias

    * Completed Action Items:

    * Pending Action Items:

+ Default document view for Writer, single page rather than automatic
          https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=88001
+ Stuart: Change the default to single page
+ Jay/Stuart: Change the tooltip to "Multipage view" or "Multiple page view"
[https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=88001#c5 - would be great to get that to gerrit]
AI: Stuart -- figure it out and get it posted.
+ Jay: Double check if we can change 'Spelling' to 'Spelling and Grammar'
          https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87648
+ Jay: Send a mail to [hidden email] with the wiki page that collects changes in menus
+ Kendy: Collecting of the user information should be incremental, somewhere in the user's profile
+ Ahmed: Push the new Sifr icons he's done recently
+ Kendy: Talk to Milos wrt. https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48622
        + Alex: Gnome 2.20-style 'a' icons & Gnome 3-style text line icons
+ Samuel: Formulas and Navigator should open in the sidebar, not as a special window
          https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85897
+ Is that issue for the Navigator too (I dont read it from the issue)
and in Writer the choice anycase was to allow opening separate too. (Cor, after discussion on 20150128)
+ the bug report only discusses the separate formulas sidebar in calc (Jay)

    * Easy Hacks to be filed:

+ Kendy: The Window's closing button should indeed close the window, not dock the sidebar
          https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87217
+ Kendy: Do / find someone / easy-hack-ize automatic opening of the Track changes toolbar
          when there are tracked changes
+ Kendy: Check how hard it is to make sidebar honor the icon size setting
+ Kendy: Easy Hack-ize fixing of uno commands that need to be duplicated in Draw and Impress
            + https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84258#c2
+ Kendy: Create Easy Hack for the Hi-contrast Sifr
+ Kendy: Adding 1.15 to the drop down list - https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85949
+ Kendy: Research what is needed to do to only disable (not hide) the formula bar in Calc when Chart component
          is activated
+ Kendy: Tell Jay how to fiddle with the default position of toolbars (so that he can tweak the Chart's toolbars)
+ Kendy: Only activate image toolbar when an image is selected - https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87362
+ Adolfo: Create easy hacks for the options Design decided to drop since 2012:
          https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Design/Whiteboards/Options/Global
+ Kendy: Should border around an image have no padding by default
          https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87360

    * GSoC tasks to be filed:

+ Jay: add a Styles usability improvements section + list the various things to implement to GSoC-next ideas
            + https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/GSoC/GenialIdeas
[styles previews in the sidebar etc.]
+ Ahmed, Jay: Brainstorm about some nice / more styles for Calc
              https://redmine.documentfoundation.org/boards/1/topics/493
[longer term - maybe better to add to the GSoC Styles task?]
+ Jay: Impress also needs more default object styles (only 2 are available)
+ Kendy: On-demand / programmatic colorization of the Sifr icons
+ Kendy: Change tracking UI in the document

    * Change tracking sidebar proposal (Heiko)

+ lots of great discussions how to finalize the sidebar's look (all)
            + looks beautiful :-)

        + comment button (Jay)
+ for standard comments - track changes comments are in the ODF focuments only (Jay)
+ does it affect the sidebar design?

+ icons for changes (Jay / Heiko)
+ concerned about using icons (Jay)
+ would a tooltip be a solution? (Kendy)
            + many actions - insert / delete / ... (Jay)
+ hopefully could be simple enough (Jay)
+ but a tooltip would be really good (Jay)
+ not necessary to set the icons in stone - possible to change to text if
the icons do not work (Kendy)

    * Last week's discussions that need a resolution:

+ Residual issues with BZ migration? Heiko not receiving digest subscription of ux-advise
issues, while those taking all UX-advise seeing issues. (Stuart)
+ bugzilla was not sending the mails; fixed now (Stuart)
            -> is fixed (Heiko)

    * UX advise bugs in bugzilla (Stuart)

+ recurring topic to be used for UX advise bugs that need action
+ keeps piling up, unfortunately (Stuart)
+ everyone should feel empowered to look at that + act (Stuart)
+ but don't want to be a "gatekeeper" :-) (Stuart)
+ for the moment, Stuart will pick 5 for each meeting - the most burning ones (Kendy)
+ and let's see how it develops (Kendy)

    * Approach to drawing toolbar / sidebar - how to handle the shapes & their color etc.

+ Disable object, image, and character toolbars in Impress (Jay, Cor)
To simply the interface by having just one toolbar above and below
          https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87676
+ we would lose the possibility to change the
style first, and then draw (Kendy)
+ it is different to how it works in Writer - there you have
no other option than to draw first, and then tweak the
                  color (Jay)
+ current way is similar to eg. Inkscape (Mattias)
+ if we used the sidebar more, it would allow more space for the
              slide (Jay)
+ but interaction should be improved there, indeed (Mattias)
+ what about to restructure this a bit more? (Kendy)
+ proposed a sidebar for colors etc. together with shapes to draw (Jay)
                  https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=87643
                  wps draw sidebar - https://vm150.documentfoundation.org/attachment.cgi?id=111225

        + Related issues of tdf 88931 - https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=88931
rather than hiding specific toolbars, provide ability to toggle all toolbars on/off
+ but what is the usability of a toolbarless draw or impress? (Jay)
+ if we were do it, provide for all modules -- like toggle full screen, users figure it out
+ Hiding the line and filling toolbar
+ Tutorial vids not mentioning its use to change the color before adding it
             https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtJztZr7Ovg&list=PLi4GzliI0ClAdSZ1i02r-QiTCyb2Wa4ie&index=12
             https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yxgITpnS08&t=1m0s (uses styles)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMaQdtjhxQM&t=20m34s (user even goes into the dialog to change color)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMlP0yEnyugFogqcxPHzTZXI8p2YO8sO2 (tutorial series not mentioning shapes)
          + Application behaviour
have to set shape style after insert - Powerpoint 2010, WPS Presenation, Calligra Stage, iWork Keynote
can set the shape style before insert - Presentations x7 (they have the settings in the shapes toolbar)
               presentation x7 - http://i.imgur.com/XrGBbMt.png

+ The "New Styles from Selection" in the Sidebar Styles and Formatting content panel allows efficient creation
of new styles from objects that have been directly formatting.
--> Needs to be more prominent (e.g. context menu) (Heiko)
+ Streamline the UI, have a single place for settings. (Jay)
Hide Object (Line and filing), Image and Character toolbars -- giving a more consistenet UI, too many choices now.
Use the standard toolbar for a few things, the drawing toolbar for a few--and hide the Line and Filing toolbar.
would be better to have all direct formatting now available in the sidebar.
Object creation would be from Standard toolbar or a revamped Drawing toolbar.
+ Alignment, arrangement, distribution, etc. - already on the context menu, so no loss. (Jay)
+ Possibly put alignment, arrangement, etc. into the Drawings toolbar (Jay)
+ Multiple selected objects receive arangement, alignment
(access via context menu only: Jay, access context menu plus toolbar: Heiko)

+ when we have the same behavior for all, fine with the change (Cor)
+ conclusion: go ahead with the change, and let's try how it behaves
+ should be down to changing eg. officecfg/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/UI/ImpressWindowState.xcu
              with Visible true to false
