Talk:Documentation/Calc Functions/HYPERLINK

    (1) Summary. I think that there are some other, perhaps more important, points to make in this section. Suggest rewriting to cover ideas such as: (i) Sets a cell as a hyperlinked cell, so that when it is clicked, Calc opens the associated hyperlink. (ii) The target of the hyperlink may be in the current spreadsheet, in another file on the same computer, on a local intranet, or on the Internet. (iii) It is also possible to use a “mailto:” link to open an email. (iv) Maybe also be possible to use an ftp link, but that needs checking.
    (2) Summary. Consider adding a note that reads – “For simplicity, this page refers to clicking a hyperlinked cell to open the linked item. Depending on the security settings for your version of LibreOffice, you may need to press the Ctrl key when clicking to open the hyperlink. The relevant setting (Ctrl-click required to open hyperlinks) can be found and changed on the Security Options and Warnings dialog accessed via Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Security > Options.”.
    (3) Syntax. Suggest removing the quotation marks from the syntax.
    (4) Returns. Suggest the following replacement text – “On clicking a hyperlinked cell, Calc attempts to go to or open the target of the defined hyperlink. When only one argument is supplied, HYPERLINK returns a text representation of the specified link target. If a second argument is supplied, then HYPERLINK returns that string or numeric value for display in the hyperlinked cell.”.
    (5) Arguments, URL. Add “(in quotation marks)” after “string”. Add a sentence recognising that exact details of the strings that will operate correctly on any computer system will depend on the nature and connectivity of that system and are beyond the scope of this page.
    (6) Arguments, CellText. Please replace with the following, to correct inconsistent grammar – “CellText is a string (in quotation marks) or numeric value, or a reference to a cell containing one of these types, which is displayed in the hyperlinked cell and returned as the result. If the CellText argument is not specified, then URL is displayed as the cell text and returned as the result.”. Also, it might be worth mentioning that if you provide a second argument as a cell reference and that cell is empty, then the hyperlinked cell displays the number 0.
    (7) Arguments, general. Is it worth mentioning any unusual conditions that we can think of? For example, what happens if the linked location, file, or page cannot be opened? (As far as I can see, an error appears only when you click the cell; this may be a dialog box or some other error indication, such as an Internet "404 Not Found" page).
    (8) Additional details, existing Note. I am not sure that this note adds any significant value on this page. Consider deleting it?
    (9) Additional details, potential addition. Maybe add a paragraph to explain how to select and edit a hyperlinked cell when you have configured LibreOffice so that a single click opens the hyperlink. A simple way is to select a nearby non-hyperlinked cell and then use the arrow buttons to move the cursor into the required hyperlinked cell. Then edit the contents of that cell in the Input line.
    (10) Additional details, potential addition. The 6th example in the Examples section strikes me as a potentially useful feature. I would like to see a paragraph in this section that describes this functionality in a little more detail.
    (11) Examples, 2nd example. Appears to be a duplicate of the 1st example.
    (12) Examples, 5th example. In the Formula column, please amend to clarify that cell B4 contains simply the given text string, not a link.
    (13) Examples, 6th example. Not sure why the text “displays the text Click example.org in the cell” is in the Formula column; it would be more consistently located in the Description. Also recommend placing quotation marks around “Click example.org”.
    (14) Examples, 7th example. In the description, recommend placing quotation marks around “Go to top”.
    (15) Examples, general. Maybe add an example showing a hyperlink to a local, non-LibreOffice file (e.g., a PDF) and consider providing a Linux or macOS address for this file. Perhaps also add an example that passes a cell reference as the 2nd argument.
