    Comments

Inserts a comment around the selected text, presentation slide, drawing page or at the current spreadsheet cursor position.

    To access this command:

    Choose Insert ▸ Comment in the menu ( Ctrl + Alt + C ).

The own comment always appears in yellow color by default.

The comments by different authors get different colours.

    Comment

    Your name in the comment

Choose Tools ▸ Options… ▸ LibreOffice ▸ User Data to enter your name so that it can show up as the comment author. See also:

    Inserting Comments in Text Documents

Use the command Insert ▸ Comment or the Ctrl + Alt + C key combination to insert a comment.

This is anchored at the current position of the cursor.

A coloured comment box is shown at the page margin, to enter the text of the comment

A line connects the anchor to the comment box.

If a text range is selected, the comment is attached to the text range.

The commented text range is shadowed.

The author name and the comment creation date and time is shown at the bottom of the comment box.

    Formatting comments

    Direct formatting of comments

You can format comments with direct formatting.

To do this, use the Formatting toolbar or the sidebar.

However, direct formatting is not recommended.

    Format all comments

Select the context menu of a comment and then Format all comments.

    The Character dialog is displayed.

There you can select the font, the font effects, the position and the highlighting.

    Formatting comments with styles

It is recommended to format the comments using styles.

There is already a paragraph style "Comment" in the sidebar Ctrl+F5 under Styles / Paragraph styles.

Right-click on this paragraph style to create new paragraph styles according to your requirements in the context menu via New and assign them to individual comments.

You can find out how to apply styles here.

    Editing comments

Every user with write permission to the document can edit and delete comments of all authors.

The comment box contains a button with a down arrow.

Click the button to open a menu with commands for comment management.

    Tip:
In the Find & Replace dialog of text documents, you can select to include the comments texts in your searches.

Affiliation of comments to the text

As described above, a line always connects a comment to a text position.

The arrow at the top of the text is the anchor ( 73EN Writer Text with ancor.png ) from which the line leads to the comment.

As long as there are not too many comments close together this is quite clear.

But if you have e.g. two anchors in the same line, there is only one line up to the page margin.

At first sight you can't see which comment belongs to which anchor.

However, you can easily recognize this if you move the mouse cursor over the respective anchor or comment.

The lines are then no longer dashed but drawn through.

The comment itself is then temporarily displayed with a shadow.

    Replying to comments

The comment box contains a button with a down arrow.

Click the button to open a menu with commands for comment management.

If the comment in a text document was written by another author, there is a Reply command in the context menu.

This command adds a new comment directly below the existing comment to which you want to reply.

The comment anchor is the same for both comments.

Type your reply text in the new comment.

Save and send your document to other authors, then those authors can add replies, too.

    Marking comments as resolved

When the document has been reviewed and commented and requires your action in its contents, you can mark the comment "Resolved" or "Unresolved".

Open the comment context menu or click on the comment drop-down list to mark the "Resolved" check box.

When you mark the comment resolved, the word "Resolved" is inserted under the date in the comment box.

When marking unresolved, the word "Resolved" is removed.

You can toggle the display of all resolved comments in the document.

Hidden done comments are not deleted.

You can show all hidden comments again.

Choose View ▸ Resolved Comments from the menu to show or hide the completed comments.

    Unmark to hide resolved comments.

The default is to display all resolved comments.

Navigating from comment to comment in text documents

When the cursor is inside a comment, you can press Ctrl + Alt + Page Down to jump to the next comment.

You can also press Ctrl + Alt + Page Up to jump to the previous comment.

When the cursor is inside the normal text, press the above mentioned keys to jump to the next or previous comment anchor.
