Function name:
COT
Category:
Mathematical
Summary:
Returns the cotangent of the given angle (in radians).
Syntax:
COT(Number)
Returns:
Returns the (trigonometric) cotangent of Number, the angle in radians. The resultant value ranges from -∞ and +∞, i.e. (-∞,+∞).
Arguments:
Number is the real number,or a reference to a cell containing that number, which is the angle in radians whose cotangent value is to be calculated.
If Number is 0, COT of 0 is not defined hence the function returns a numeric error(#NUM!) value.
Additional details:
- The cotangent of an angle is equivalent to 1 divided by the tangent of that angle.
- Mathematically, cotangent of multiple of π, i.e. {......-2π,-π,0,+π,+2π.....} is undefined but the PI() function uses an approximate value of π hence the function doesn't return any error value except for 0.
- To insert an angle in degrees, either multiply the angle by PI()/180 or use the RADIANS function to convert the angle to radians.
The figure below illustrates the function COT.
Examples:
Formula | Description | Returns |
---|---|---|
=COT(1) | cotangent of 1 radian | 0.642092615934331 |
=COT(PI()/4) | cotangent of PI/4 or π/4 radians | 1 |
=COT(RADIANS(60)) | cotangent of 60° by first converting angle in degrees to radians | 0.577350269189626 |
